CII meet on Climate Change

CII, Eastern Region, organised here on Thursday a panel discussion on how to strengthen NGO business partnership to cope with the challenges being thrown up by climate change, according to a CII-ER release. The keynote address was given by Mr Fergus Auld, First Secretary, Climate Change & Energy, British High Commission. Among other speakers were Mr Debal Roy, Chief Environment Officer, Government of West Bengal; Ms Malini Mehra, CEO, Central For Social Markets; Mr Subhas Dutta, green activist; Mr Ram Agarwal, Chairman, West Bengal State Council and Director S R Batliboi & Company; and Mr Sanjay Wadhvani, Deputy High Commissioner, British Deputy High Commission here, the release added.

Climate Workshops for Schools in Kolkata supported by the Department of Env & Forests, Govt. of WB

Introduction: 

The Centre for Social Markets will conduct a series of workshops, the first of its kind in Kolkata in collaboration with the GoWB. To make students/ teachers adequately ‘climate change literate’, these workshops have been designed to understand the topics and relevance of Climate Change. The effort would be to strengthen the academic process by demonstrating the curricular possibilities through extra-curricular engagements on climate change.


Activities:

1) Briefing Session: “From subjects to disciplines -- climate change education as a tool”. A daylong session is being organized on 5th May 2010 at the Aranya Bhawan in Kolkata to introduce the project to the Heads of Schools/ Institutions, State Government officials and the Academia. (Enclosed: Schedule).

Sit & Draw Competition - World Environment Day

On the occasion of World Environment Day, 5 June 2010, Saturday, a Sit & Draw Competition will be held for children aged 10-14 years. The event is being jointly organised by the Centre for Social Markets (CSM) and the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum (BITM). BITM is the is the first Scientific and Industrial Museum in this country. (www.bitmcal.org)
 
The event is a part of CSM’s climate change education project supported by the Ministry of Environment and the Forest Department, Government of West Bengal.  
 
Children across Kolkata and from the KMC/ NGO run schools would be encouragedto participate in this event which will help to create a feeling of awareness among the young participants on the need to conserve our eco systems and biodiversity. The theme of the art competition would be “Many Species. One Planet. One Future, this year’s theme for the World Environment Day.
 
Duration of the competition would be two hours approx. from 10 AM- 12 PM. It will be held at the BITM premises at 19A, Gurusaday Road, Kolkata 700 019. Participants have to arrive by 10 AM for registration/ refreshments. Children will be categorised in two groups based on their age:
- Group I: Children aged 10-12 years (or standard V-VI)
- Group II: Children aged 12-14 years (or standard VII-VIII)
 
A total number of 200 are expected to particpate in the Sit & Draw competition.
 
Winners will be presented with exciting prizes, and merit certificates. A special jury and a celebrity Artist would be present to announce the winners and hand over the prizes and certificates.
Let us show the world how these young minds can demonstrate enormous creativity, thoughtfulness and concern for the environment. Encourage them to participate.
