CSM - WBUT Workshop

This workshop, titled ICT Industry and Education: Bridging the Gap, is being organised jointly by the Centre for Social Markets (CSM), initiator of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Forum and the West Bengal University of Technology.

The ICT Forum has been formed in Autumn 2004 by CSM, a UK and Kolkata-based non-profit, working since 2000 to promote responsible business practices among domestic business and ethnic minorities in diaspora communities. Formed with participation from government, the industry and civil society, the Forum seeks to promote innovative tri-sector initiatives for the betterment of the ICT sector in West Bengal. The WBUT, being the largest prospective source of ICT industry recruits, is a key ally in the ICT Forum's work.

The workshop seeks to address the current need for better communicative and soft skills among new recruits in the ICT industry, being keenly felt by recruiters. Focusing on teaching communications skills is as important as the teaching of the core technical skills to the students, for them to be able to make a smooth transition to a knowledge society. Industry and academia have therefore decided to address the most important issues regarding developing the skills of prospective IT professionals, through a workshop on October 1, 2005.

This free event - to be attended by key Industry practitioners, Government representatives, Entrepreneurs in the education sector, Principals of colleges and institutes offering IT education, and top Academicians who have worked in this area - seeks to chart out the practical steps that educational institutions need to adopt in order to upgrade the communication and soft skills profile of their students.
